Christopher E. Mandel, CPCU, RIMS-CRMP, ARM, AIC

Christopher Mandel is a veteran senior risk management thought leader with over 35 years in large global corporate risk management, including serving as CRO for USAA Group for ten years. He is currently leading his own Nashville-based risk consultancy (Excellence in Risk Management, LLC) after eight years as founding director of Sedgwick Institute and SVP, Strategic Solutions, Sedgwick.

Chris has designed, launched, managed, governed and run-off numerous captives and RRGs (in Vermont, Arizona and Bermuda) over the course of his career, and has been on the faculty and board of the International Center for Captive Insurance Education (ICCIE) and the teaching faculty of the Risk Management Society (RIMS) since 2007.

He is an instructor of the ERM Practice at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and a board member for various industry organizations. Chris is President and Managing Consultant at his firm, Excellence in Risk Management, LLC and Chief Risk Advisor for USI. He was named Business Insurance Risk Manager of the Year in 2004. He served as RIMS president in 2003 and was a 7 year board member, and was awarded their highest honor for lifetime achievement in 2016 (the Goodell Award). He is a RIMS Fellow and is certified in ISO31000. Chris has had continuously running columns in the trade press since 1996. He regularly teaches for the Risk Management Society and currently writes for the International Risk Management Institute (IRMI). He holds a bachelor’s degree in business management and a MBA in Finance.
